Punk? Garage rock? Metal?
It's hard to force Ohio's Highbinder into any particular one genre as they seem
to straddle and blend them so well on their latest release "...All The Way To Hell." It's become almost a cliche for a band to resist being pigeon-holed, but such is the case with Highbinder. One minute you think that you're definitely listening to a punk record, then the next moment, maybe within the same song, things have shifted to a metal growl, perhaps followed by laid back stoner rock. Heck, there’s even a moment on “White Lie Ward” where the groups channels Judas Priest’s
Rob Helford.
Highbinder (meaning “corrupt politician,” a fitting name for a punk band) seems to be somewhat akin to fellow punks Social Distortion, not in their style, but how they’re forging their own type of rock. Highbinder injects their punk with 70’s rock, as opposed to the latter’s
rock-a-billy swagger, but the result is still a new flavor of punk/rock unique
to the group that plays it. In other words, Queens of the Stone Age fans should
be all over this release.
Though Highbinder’s influences are varied they remain cohesive; instead of being all over the place their sound has resulted in a promising release with “...All
The Way To Hell.”
