Das Scheit is a Gothic, Industrial Metal band from Germany which will immediately
lead to comparisons to Rammstein. Sure, there are similarities, from the use of electronics and accent-heavy guttural vocals, but Das Scheit is careful to forge their own path without sounding too much like their countrymen. Whereas Rammstein’s heavy licks carry with them a pop sensibility, Scheit’s release is much more rock oriented. This
is straightforward metal that just happens to be German.
They begin they’re latest release, Superbitch, with the assaulting “7 Seconds”, a good metal song that is followed by some more straightforward metal in “Coming Up Roses.” That track begins strong and rocks throughout its chorus. The track makes good use of the interplay between the guitars and the synths, though somehow I don’t believe the singer as he sings that “everything is coming up roses” as he sneers with German irony.
The album slows down a bit for the next couple of tracks with some metal ballads
that are not especially noteworthy before they turn up the sarcasm again with “About U.” The singer curses some unknown subject for doing horrible things to him (one can assume it was during some kind of relationship) before wailing that this song “is not about you.” Think of it as a much harsher and pissed off version of the Carly Simon standard “You’re
So Vain.”
Though the CD begins to lose appeal about halfway through overall it’s a competent
release by a group able to maintain their identity without sounding like that
other German metal band.
